It was in 2019, on April 3rd...

Mario Lemieux seemed very attentive as he listened to Mike Bossy and Guy Lafleur.

Legendary players who, among themselves, beat opposing goaltenders 913 times during their years in our major junior league.

We dedicate this HISTORY & RECORDS section to

the memory of

Guy Lafleur and Mike Bossy,

MONTREAL MAKES ITS DEBUT IN 1972-73

The Chicoutimi Saguenéens and the Hull Festivals will follow in 1973-74.

  • Since the founding of the League in 1969, the face of the league chaired by Robert LeBel has already changed significantly. One of the changes, the league name was modified. The "Quebec Junior A Hockey League" became the "Quebec Major Junior Hockey League". This name will be used from 1971 to 2023.
  • The Laval Saints were dissolved at the end of their 1st season in 1969-70.
  • In 1971-72, the Rosemont National moved to Laval while retaining its team name.
  • Just before the 1972-73 season, the Verdun Maple Leafs forfeited after 3 rather difficult seasons on the ice.
  • In 1973-74, the Montreal Bleu-Blanc-Rouge, appeared as the Montreal Juniors.
  • Another dissolved franchise, this time it was the Drummondville Rangers who left the League after only 5 seasons, from 1969-70 to 1973-74.

Michel “Mike/Michael” Bossy still ranks 1st in QMJHL regular season scoring history. In 1976-77, just before beginning his prolific professional career with the New York Islanders, Bossy dislodged Jacques Jr. Locas, who had held the record since 1973-74 with 269 goals. SEE THE RECORD!

Number 66 - MARIO LEMIEUX!

The 1983-84 season was without a doubt one of the most publicized in the history of the QMJHL. A unique athlete dominates, he is only 18 years old, his extraordinary talent combined with his impressive size of 6 feet 3 inches and 200 pounds, make all the organizations of the National League salivate. Mario Lemieux will become the 1st overall NHL Draft pick in 1984, and it is the Pittsburgh Penguins who will obtain this "MAGNIFICENT" gem. SEE ONE OF HIS MANY RECORDS: 133 goals! Or simply, see the next list, including the 61 games in a row, with at least one point.

During the 1984 playoffs, Mario Lemieux would be the leader of the Laval Voisins who would win the President Cup. Lemieux, in only 14 playoff games, would score 29 goals and total 52 points. Two records that he would keep for almost 15 years...

In his last regular season game in the QMJHL, on March 14th, 1984, in a 16-4 win by the Voisins de Laval over the Chevaliers de Longueuil, he recorded 11 points. This was his best personal performance at the major junior level. His 6 goals allowed him to surpass Guy Lafleur's (Québec | 1970-71) record of 130 goals in a season. Mario Lemieux would thus establish an untouchable mark of 133 goals, and would complete his last junior season with 282 points after 70 games.

A first President Cup for the Longueuil Chevaliers franchise

  • In 7 years, from 1983 to 1990, this franchise participated in 5 League finals...

  • In their very first season in the QMJHL in 1982-83, the Chevaliers players believed in the message of head coach Jacques Lemaire, so much so that they participated in their first final. Their opponents, the Verdun Juniors and their grandiose superstar Pat LaFontaine, filled the Montreal Forum to the rafters, and proved invincible.

  • In 1983-84, a 2nd final for the Longueuil troupe, but Mario Lemieux of the Voisins de Laval was simply too strong!

  • At the end of the 1986-87 season, then led by Guy Chouinard, and led by the tireless and robust Marc Saumier (41 points in 20 games | 48 penalty minutes), the Chevaliers were crowned playoff champions, beating the Chicoutimi Saguenéens 4 games to 1.

  • A few months after the celebrations, the franchise moved to Victoriaville at the start of training camp. A new logo, that of the Tigres, was embroidered on the red jerseys... But the success on the ice continued for this franchise; it participated in the finals again in 1989 and 1990, without however touching the Cup again.

MARTIN BRODEUR

Martin Brodeur, St-Hyacinthe Laser goalie, 1st round pick of the Devils (NHL)

NHL records, as a goalie, at the time of his retirement:

  • 1266 games
  • 691 wins
  • 3 goals to his credit
  • 125 shutouts

Average of 2.70 - a record!

In 1990-91, Chicoutimi Saguenéens goaltender Félix Potvin had the best season ever for a goaltender, with a goals-against average of 2.70. Obviously, this mark was improved over the years, but for his time, Potvin was probably the best goaltender in the League.

Spring 1992

The Verdun Collège Français is celebrating in style!

It was at the end of a long 7-game final series that the Collège Français got the better of the Trois-Rivières Draveurs.

  • Summer 1992 - shock in Mauricie... the Trois-Rivières Draveurs were sold, and were transferred to Sherbrooke. This is how the Faucons were born.
  • Spring 1994 - the Verdun Collège Français team closed its doors for good. All players were subject to a special draft. This is how promising goaltender Jean-Sébastien Giguère became the property of the brand new expansion franchise, the Halifax Mooseheads...

A real power and oh so intimidating!

The Laval Titan: no less than 5 finals in 7 years!

In the spring of 1993, the Titan were on their third playoff title in five years (1989 | 1990 | 1993). They would also make the League Finals in 1994 and 1995.

The Titan's home was nicknamed the "HOUSE OF PAIN". The opponent never had it easy during this period at the good old Colisée de Laval.

Alexandre Daigle
Alexandre Daigle

Alexandre Daigle, best professional prospect

The Ottawa Senators would make him the first overall pick in the 1993 National Hockey League draft.

In the early 1990s, Alexandre Daigle quickly became one of the great superstars in QMJHL history. Highly charismatic, he will be remembered as the most publicized player since Guy Lafleur and Mario Lemieux.

Unsurprisingly, the extremely fast skater with agile hands was selected 1st in the 1991 QMJHL draft. At 16, he was electrifying in Victoriaville, and led several offensive categories in the QMJHL, with 110 points including 42 on the power play: he was chosen as the Canadian League's rookie of the year.

In 1992-93, his average of 2.6 points per game was the best in the entire QMJHL. With a harvest of 137 points in 53 regular season games, he fed Claude Savoie like no other, and this teammate scored 70 goals, a record for the Tigres. The title of "Top Professional Prospect" attached to the Michael Bossy Trophy is awarded to Alexandre Daigle.

In 1993, the latter was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the very first place of the National League draft. In his very first season as a rookie, he made a successful entrance by participating in a quarter of the 201 goals of the young expansion franchise, with 51 points including 20 goals, finishing in 2nd place in his club's scorers.

In 1994-95, with the NHL in a lockout, he made a remarkable return to the QMJHL, and filled the arenas again. He would add to his impressive statistics even more, completing his junior internship with 292 points in 143 games (including the playoffs). In addition, he would be an asset for Canada at the World Junior Championship in 1995, and he would return with his 2nd gold medal, since he had also celebrated in 1993 with the unifoliate uniform on his back.

HALIFAX GETS A FRANCHISE - A new era is dawning, AND THINGS ARE GOING TO MOVE!

The Halifax Mooseheads, the first team in the Maritime provinces

  • In 1994-95, the arrival of the Mooseheads allowed the QMJHL to go from 12 to 13 teams.
  • In 1995-96, the Moncton Alpines also made their arrival the following season. They became the Wildcats in their 2nd season following the buyout by Mr. Robert K. Irving. The St-Jean Lynx were purchased by Maurice Tanguay and his associates, and became the Rimouski Océanic.
  • It was in 1996-97 that the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies arrived in the League. It was in fact the St-Hyacinthe Laser that moved to Abitibi, to join the Val-d'Or Foreurs who had been established there since 1993.
  • In 1997-98, the Granby Predateurs were transferred to Cape Breton to become the Screaming Eagles. At the same time, the Baie-Comeau Drakkar became the 15th active franchise in the Courteau league. Not to mention that the Beauport Harfangs were sold to Jacques Tanguay, Patrick Roy and Michel Cadrin; without delay, the name was changed to take on the identity of the city of Québec with the name of the Remparts.
  • In 1998-99, the Laval Titan du Collège Français and their owner Léo-Guy Morrissette will move their team to Bathurst, New Brunswick.
  • In 1999, the QMJHL granted a franchise to a group led by Serge Savard. The Montreal Rocket makes its debut, with a name paying homage to the illustrious Maurice Richard. The total number of teams in the QMJHL climbed to 16.
  • Then in 2003-04, a franchise will be established in the United States, in Lewiston, Maine. The MAINEiacs are thus born, with the players of the recently relocated Sherbrooke Castors franchise. Another move, this time, it is the Montreal Rocket who has difficulty attracting crowds to the Maurice-Richard Arena and the Molson Centre, and who decide to relocate to Charlottetown. They will thus become the Prince Edward Island Rocket.

The GRANBY PREDATEURS and the Morrissette family brought the Memorial Cup back to Quebec in the spring of 1996! As the players shouted at the top of their lungs after their historic victory: "RESPECT, RESPECT, RESPECT..."

" Quebec, we are here! Quebec, we are HERE!!!" That's how the general director and co-owner, Jean-Claude Morrissette, exclaimed in an interview, at the end of the final game won against the Peterborough Petes by a score of 4-0. Without knowing it, the Granby organization was launching a victorious era for the teams of the Courteau league.

The Rimouski Oceanic wastes no time in making its mark

The team's very first big star will be a talented young center player. This is Vincent Lecavalier, who on the day of his QMJHL draft, had been hidden in a car, to make the League teams believe that he would not come. But the Oceanic and Mr. Tanguay had planned very well what would become a masterstroke!

Frédéric Bouchard has fun and records 51 points including 22 goals

For a defenseman in the same playoff year, these are two new QMJHL records.

At the age of 20, Marc-André Bergeron made QMJHL history with 42 goals as a defenseman in one season, surpassing the feat of 41 goals by Derrick Walser of the Rimouski Océanic, 3 years earlier, during the 1997-98 campaign.

The 300 POINTS club among DEFENDERS is SOLD OUT!

In over 55 years of history, the QMJHL has only seen 5 defensemen reach the 300-point mark in a regular season. Robert Picard (313 points | 1977) was the first, while the last was Danny Groulx (332 | 2002). Pierre Sévigny (318 points | 1982), Billy Campbell (321 | 1984) and Jean-Marc Richard (301 | 1987) are also members of this select club.

A new audience record for a Memorial Cup tournament

In May 2003, it was at the Colisée Pepsi in Quebec City that a new attendance record was set for the presentation of the Memorial Cup tournament, when 84,675 spectators passed through the turnstiles at the entrance to the Colisée to watch the games played by the teams from Quebec City, Hull, Kelowna and Kitchener. In fact, an average of 10,584 fans were present per game. Quebec City, a hockey city!

On the ice, the Remparts lost their 3 games as host team. But the Hull Olympiques, our President Cup champions, made it to the finals of the competition, losing to the Kitchener Rangers by a score of 6-3 in the deciding game.

Raymond Bolduc hired by the QMJHL

Former general manager of the Beauport Harfangs and the Québec Remparts, Raymond Bolduc, joins the QMJHL as director of hockey operations. He will later become disciplinary prefect, while being in charge of designing the calendar.

A longevity that spanned five decades in the QMJHL or with one of its teams, for this great, respected leader with a strong character. Let's remember that it all started for him with the Hull Olympiques as a scout in 1982. He officially retired from hockey at the end of the 2023-24 season, after 42 seasons. Gilles Courteau, the one who hired him in the QMJHL, worked 47 years in the QMJHL.

In the lineage of Lafleur, Lemieux, Daigle...

Here comes the Sidney Crosby era!

He drew crowds to every arena for two seasons. It was a sold-out crowd in every amphitheater when #87 of the Oceanic came to town.

NEW RECORD - The Rimouski Oceanic no longer loses, going 35 games in a row without a defeat, the last 28 of the regular season, and the first 7 of the playoffs.

Unsurprisingly, the team led by Doris Labonté will be the QMJHL representative at the Memorial Cup tournament, but will lose 4-0 in the decisive game against the powerful London Knights (OHL).

MAINEiacs beat Foreurs in final

For the first and only time in history, the President Cup will parade in the United States. The Lewiston MAINEiacs are champions, thanks to extraordinary performances by Marc-André Cliche and David Perron, defenseman Chad Denny and star goaltender Jonathan Bernier.

...

After 8 seasons in Lewiston, at the end of the 2010-11 season, the team will be bought by the League, and will cease its activities. The QMJHL will therefore have only 17 teams for the 2011-12 season, but this is temporary because the Sherbrooke Phoenix will join the ranks of the Courteau league for the 2012-13 season. Ironically, let's remember that the Sherbrooke Castors had been transferred to Lewiston in 2003-04...

THE 2019-20 SEASON UNFINISHED

THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC TAKES PLACE

The playoffs had to be cancelled; the President Cup could not be awarded after the final game, a first in 51 seasons…

THE UNFINISHED 2019-20 SEASON: COVID-19... While the Sherbrooke Phoenix and the Moncton Wildcats had already reached the 50-win mark, Thursday, March 12th 2020 will forever be etched in the memory of all QMJHL fans. The 2019-20 campaign never got going again, so much so that only 572 of the 613 regular season games were played, with the Sherbrooke Phoenix being declared champion. Alexis Lafrenière, on the way to the National Hockey League

In 2020, the New York Rangers selected him with the first overall pick in the NHL Draft.

The Rimouski Oceanic left winger also won the QMJHL scoring championship and the Jean Béliveau Trophy in 2019-20 with a harvest of 112 points. In 3 seasons in the QMJHL: 297 points in 173 games. Not to mention that his Plus-Minus differential of +128, places him in 3rd place in history, just behind Jonathan Huberdeau (+139) and Sean Couturier (+141), but ahead of a certain Sidney Crosby (+127)...

ANOTHER SEASON SHORTENED DUE TO COVID-19

  • Team ranking based on points percentage instead of actual points tally: Charlottetown Islanders win 1st regular season championship (.875).

  • The Maritime teams played each other, in front of very small crowds.

  • The teams from the province of Quebec met for a few days in protected environments to play blocks of games, played in front of no spectators.

  • Cédric Desruisseaux (Charlottetown) scored 42 goals in only 40 games; total of 78 points and a PLUS/MINUS differential of +46! An exceptional season under the circumstances!

  • Colten Ellis (1.78 | Charlottetown) and Jonathan Lemieux (1.96 | Val-d’Or): the first two goaltenders in history, with a goals-against average below 2.00 at the end of a regular season.

  • The QMJHL was therefore the only active hockey league in Canada, at all levels, to award its champions the regular season and playoff trophies during the 2020-21 season... However, only 307 of the 540 scheduled games were played.

The Tigres did not have the chance to represent the QMJHL at the Memorial Cup tournament. For the Ontario League, like the Western League, there were no playoffs, forcing the cancellation of the CHL's end-of-season competition.

CHAMPIONS IN A VAST ARENA, FAR FROM THEIR "COLISÉE DESJARDINS"

2021 – the Victoriaville Tigres win the President Cup Final in 6 games (4-2) against the Val-d’Or Foreurs.

All games of the semi-final and final series were presented in the protected environment of the Centre Videotron in Quebec City, due to the imposed "social distancing"; approximately 2,000 spectators per game – the limit allowed by the government – were able to take their seats to watch the last 5 games of the final.

THE POST-COVID ERA…

The 2021-22 season, despite a few weeks of inactivity mid-season due to Covid-19 – once again – was played in an “almost normal” manner. The 612-game schedule was played in full, but ended on Sunday, May 1, more than a month after the original date. This is why the playoff format was changed, with best-of-5 series taking place in the first 3 playoff rounds. In the grand final, it was in a traditional best-of-7 format that the Shawinigan Cataractes surprised the Charlottetown Islanders by eliminating them in 5 games.

Then, at the Memorial Cup tournament hosted in Saint John by the Sea Dogs, the host team, it was a return to the stakes of the precious trophy; in 2020 and 2021, the tournament had been cancelled due to Covid-19. In the grand final, the Saint John Sea Dogs defeated the representatives of the Ontario League (Hamilton) to give a 3rd consecutive Memorial Cup victory to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. In fact, in the last 10 editions of the competition, representatives of the QMJHL have won the Memorial Cup on 6 occasions, which is a credit to our major junior teams based in Quebec and the Maritimes.

The QMJHL wins a 4th Memorial Cup in a row!

In 2023, with the ultimate victory of the Québec Remparts, it was a 7th Cup in the last 11 tournaments for the QMJHL...

  • Let's remember that the Memorial Cup is at stake in an end-of-season tournament bringing together the champion teams of the Ontario, Western and Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League. The 4th team invited to compete with the league champion is the one that hosts the tournament in its city.
  • A 15-year drought without a victory for the QMJHL was ended by the Granby Prédateurs in 1996.
  • In 1997, the Hull Olympiques won it again.
  • Then in 2000, the Rimouski Océanic, led by Brad Richards, also brought home the big trophy.
  • So the results obtained by our representatives from 1996 to 2000, we can admit that it was the necessary boost to regain confidence on a national scale.

From 1971-72 to 2023-24, the name "Quebec Major Junior Hockey League" will have been used for 53 seasons.

The QMJHL becomes the "Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League"

At a meeting held in Pointe-Claire (QC), on December 14th, 2023, the QMJHL Members’ Assembly adopted a resolution to change the league’s name and unveil an English-language logo. From now on, the League will be known as the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League. The French-language logo remains unchanged.

Shutouts: from 7 to... 8!

From 1974-75 to 2020-21, no fewer than 7 goalies managed to shut out opposing teams on 7 occasions in a single season. William Rousseau of the Huskies rose above the fray in 2023-24, with a total of 8 shutouts, writing a new page in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League record book.

The End of the Titan in Bathurst

The very last game was played at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre on April 4, 2025...

On December 20, 2024, in the middle of the regular season, Marc Guignard and Serge Thériault, two of the Titan's 11 shareholders, had some very bad news to share with their fans. After a year of searching for new owners, accompanied by league commissioner Mario Cecchini, they confirmed that the Acadie-Bathurst Titan team had been sold to a trio of investors from Newfoundland and Labrador: John Harvey Patten, John R. Steele, and Jason Sharpe.

The team's long 27-season tenure in Bathurst will be remembered. They've experienced some tough times, but also some memorable, historic moments:

* 1 Memorial Cup (2018)

* 2 President Cups (1999 & 2018)

* 1 regular season championship (2001-02)

* 4 appearances in the League Finals (1999, 2001, 2002 & 2018)

* A game where QMJHL records were tied by the Titan, with Mathieu Benoit scoring 8 goals while defenseman François Beauchemin recorded 8 assists (1999-11-14)...

The Wildcats showed their claws in 2024-25

Fresh off winning the regular season championship with a record 108 points and 53 wins, Gardiner MacDougall's players defeated the Rimouski Oceanic in the League final in May 2025.

Some highlights from 2024-25:

  • A .844 regular season points percentage, the 8th best in QMJHL history
  • Rudy Guimond, a goaltender who shone, posting 24 straight undefeated games in regulation time (16 in the season and 8 in the playoffs)
  • Caleb Desnoyers, at just 17 years old, amassed 30 points in 19 playoff games, earning him the QMJHL playoff MVP award

Captain Markus Vidicek proudly presents the Gilles-Courteau Trophy to his teammates after the final series, won 4 games to 2 over Rimouski.

Caleb Desnoyers (Moncton) - he became only the sixth player, aged 17 or younger, to win the Guy-Lafleur Trophy at the end of the QMJHL playoffs. He follows Dale Hawerchuk, Pat LaFontaine, Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Jonathan Drouin.

At the Memorial Cup tournament in a very high-level competition, the Wildcats gave all the efforts. But in the semi-final game, against the eventual champions, the London Knights, the Wildcats' historic season was cut short by an opponent packed with more than 10 future NHL prospects.
