History

The arrival of the Drakkar: 1997

The Drakkar joined the QMJHL in 1997, bringing the total number of teams in the league to 15 at the time.

Under Richard Martel as head coach, the franchise won two conference championships (2000-01 and 2002-03) and a League championship in 2002-03 after winning 50 games.

In 2006-07, with 125 points, François Bouchard became the second Drakkar player to win the Jean-Béliveau Trophy as the QMJHL's top scorer in the regular season. He succeeded Joël Perrault (116 points | 2002-03).

However, the single-season points record remains that of Yanick Lehoux (135 | 2000-01);

Lehoux is also the best scorer in the history of the Drakkar with a harvest of 382 points.

The Drakkar honours one of its best defensemen of its first decade; the #18 jersey worn by Maxime Fortunus from 1999 to 2003 is being retired.

The latter still holds the record of 148 lifetime points in regular season for a Drakkar defenseman.

Maxime Fortunus was proclaimed the QMJHL defenseman of the year in 2002-03. In the photo to the left, he receives the Emile-"Butch"-Bouchard Trophy from host Kevin Lowe, himself a former defenseman for the Quebec Remparts in the 1970s.

Success in 2013 and 2014

During the 2013-14 season, the Drakkar won its second regular season championship in existence, while being coached by Eric Veilleux.

In the 2013 and 2014 playoffs, the Côte-Nord team reached the QMJHL grand final.

However, the Drakkar players were unable to get their hands on the President Cup, losing successively to Halifax and Val-d'Or.

Philippe Cadorette - with his 38 playoff victories (a team record), he led the Drakkar to the final twice in a row, in 2013 and 2014. Cadorette holds a host of records with the Drakkar, including that of the most shutouts in his lifetime, seasons and playoffs included (21 = 16+5).

Jérémy Grégoire has demonstrated his great talent both on the ice and through his academic results, which earned him two QMJHL student-athlete of the year titles in 2013-14 and 2014-15.

Head coach Eric Veilleux (2012=>2014) still holds the record for the number of lifetime playoff wins with the Drakkar with 26. His best total was 15 in one year, when his team lost in the 7th and final game of the final against Val-d'Or in the spring of 2014.

All hopes were allowed in 2024, but...

In 2023-24, the Côte Nord representatives amazed their fans in every way, breaking many franchise records. The men led by Jean-François Grégoire won 53 games, and maintained a points percentage of .801, eclipsing two marks from the 2002-03 season, namely 50 wins and 0.750. With 109 points and a regular season championship, the entire population of Baie-Comeau rallied behind their team for the playoffs.

Baie-Comeau made it to the final of the Gilles-Courteau Trophy; it was a 3rd attempt to win the precious trophy. But the Drummondville Voltigeurs completely muzzled the Drakkar in the final, limiting them to 5 goals in 4 games, and they swept the honors of the final playoff round.

The 2nd longest game in the QMJHL history

On April 4, 2025, the Cape Breton Eagles hosted the Baie-Comeau Drakkar. Both clubs played their longest games ever. The Eagles emerged victorious, with a score of 3-2.

This first-round playoff game ended in the fifth overtime period, in the 147th minute of the game; the winning goal in this second-longest game in League history was scored by Angelo Fullerton. The winning goaltender, Jakub Milota, stopped 84 shots, just two off the League record.

The Drakkar, with their 86 shots in the game, achieved the second-highest total in a QMJHL game. The series was ultimately won by the Drakkar at home in Game 6, propelling them to the quarterfinal round against the Moncton Wildcats.
